How do I Become a Freelance Writer?
Freelance writing can be a good way to earn extra income, but you may not know how to become a freelance writer The barrier of entry of becoming a freelance writer is very low. You can’t really ever do anything unless you come up with a plan and execute the proper steps to get your desired end result.
Step one if you would like to become a freelance writer is for you to decide what kind of writing you would like to do. Don’t overlook the importance of this simple step. If you don’t pick the right kind of writing that suits you best you may never be able to reach your ultimate goal.
Here is a list of the type of writing that you can do as a freelance writer: You can write news stories for magazines and newspapers, you can write novels or short stories, you can write reviews, you can write advertising copy, you can write articles, etc. You have to figure out what type of writing you want to do if you want to become a freelance writer.
Many freelance writers often maintain their own blogs to showcase what kind of writing they are capable of doing; do you have a blog already? Some people belong to writing clubs to help sharpen their writing skills and get constructive criticism, if you do belong to such a group how is your work generally received?
Whatever type of writing you want to do, it will always help if you have a significant amount of experience already doing that sort of writing. For example, if you’ve never written a poem before, you probably shouldn’t try to become a freelance poet. Not only should you have already written extensively in the field you want to become a freelancer for, but you should have also received some sort of objective feedback on it, so you know whether you’re good at it or not.
Once you are confident that you are the type of writer that you want to be you should get together some samples of your work and assemble a small portfolio. With the advent of the internet it is now fairly easy to submit your portfolio to a wide selection of potential hirers of freelance writers – the problem is getting them to read it!
If you want someone to take you and your work seriously you have to ensure you send your portfolio to the right person. Do not get lazy, it is very easy to find out the person’s name and email address, make sure you do this. The next step is to make sure that your email is professional and courteous; introduce yourself and invite them to have a look at your work and ask them to kindly consider you to be a freelance writer for them.
If your work is to a reasonable standard and relevant to the content that is usually included in the publication, you will be considered and probably invited for an interview and, possibly, a trial period. Although you will only be paid for your work that is published, a trial period will not only confirm your position, if successful, but will also confirm that you have made the right choice.
